The ECO2PLAST project aims to develop a solution for composite plastic injection systems, comprising a single integrated system, an automated line of monitored manufacturing and an economical and environmental performance management solution. The solution must be able to model, estimate performance and monitor in real time the process and equipment involved in the system. The proposed solution is in response to the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, orientated towards the themes of efficiency, sustainability and rational use of resources. The need to create value in a sustainable context led this consortium to devise a solution that allows quantifying and simulating the different inflows and outflows in a plastic injection process and generating indicators of environmental performance, eco-efficiency and process efficiency. The solution will be able to monitor and optimize resource consumption by identifying cost factors and critical parameters for each stage of the product life cycle and simulating impacts from alternative scenarios. The integration of different information systems in a complex operational space allows a competitive advantage to be obtained: Potential GLN customers will be able to obtain cost reductions in the supply chain (supply-chain efficiency) and respond to a central theme in society: sustainability and rational management of resources. At the experimental level, innovative tools, evaluation and simulation modules, procedures and routines will be developed, integrating them with existing information systems in the GLN Plast plastic injection lines. It is expected that the final product and skills created will constitute a new area of business, thus extending the value chain of the company. The project will also contribute to improving the position of Portuguese companies in a market with sustained growth at a global level, representing extreme importance for the world economy – the plastics industry.
